After Smiley died last fall, George asked the dog's fans to honor his life through kindness and to "give back, and always see with your heart."

When finished, the statue will be placed in a courtyard at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library, where Smiley was a regular. Kids often sat with him there, and read.

“Smiley really started his career in (the) library,” Carolyn Nordheimer-James, library CEO, told Toronto.com. “He came once a week every Thursday. He touched hundreds of children in the community.”

Last week, George and her 8-year-old son, Shepherd, traveled to Utah to see the work in progress. But first, they made a stop in Eugene, Oregon, to pick up a 12-week-old puppy named Sunny from his foster home.

"Once we brought him inside and he met Shepherd, I could tell they were going to make an incredible match and family," she said.

Then George, Shepherd and Sunny flew to Utah to see Smiley's statue for the first time.

Creating the work has been "a moving experience" for Toritch. She hopes the statute, which will be cast in bronze in the coming months, will continue to deliver the message she feels this dog so embodies.

"All you have to do is to be kind and smile," Toritch said. "We all need love, kindness and acceptance."

George believes Toritch has truly captured Smiley's essence. Being there with the artwork was very "close to seeing him again," George said. "You know what I mean, how you wish? One more time. That's how it felt."

Having Sunny and Shepherd there with her helped George get through the emotional experience. And while she didn't get to see Smiley as a puppy, she thinks he would have looked a lot like Sunny. She thinks Sunny will make an excellent therapy dog, too.

"I felt like it was Smiley passing the torch on a tiny bit to the puppy. This is as close as the puppy would get to Smiley," George said of the special gathering. "It was just so perfect."
